Are there any herbal remedies for hypothyroidism?

Full Question: I am a 62 year old female and have had hypothyroidism now for 3 years. I do not have any symptoms from the medication, Levothyroxine (100 mcg a day), but I would like to be able to get off of this medication somehow and find a way to better help my hypothyroid condition. Every Allopathic doctor I have gone to tells me it is no big deal to take the medication for the rest of my life but I would like to find a way to get off of the medication and treat the problem in a more natural way. Can you please suggest possible solutions for me to take?

Answer: Thank you for asking this question as many people have similar questions. You are not alone in wanting to try other methods. I hope this is not too disappointing, but if you have no symptoms from your dose of Levothyroxine, it is a good option. Holistic medicine means using the best treatment available, and this one is not at all bad. If your thyroid hormone levels remain in the healthy range, it may be appropriate. We do know from long term studies that the doctors are not wrong in their assurance that this medication is both safe and useful.

I do have a suggestion for another solution: consider taking the herb Ashwagandha (Withania Somniferum) along with your normal dose of Levothyroxine, and ask your prescribing physician about including it in your regimen and to monitor your hormone levels for the next several months. It may be that in time you can decrease your prescription dose while improving endogenous thyroid function, but we do not have enough research to point with confidence that Ashwagandha can ever replace thyroid supplementation. Other alternatives require a more comprehensive work-up and follow-through with a practitioner trained in the use of alternatives for thyroid health who also know you well, your body and personal history.
